Rebranding Texas: "The Carbon State"

Satire by Daniel Rigney

The state of Texas deserves special national and world recognition for its carbon industry’s ongoing contributions to climate dynamics and weather enhancement. Accordingly, we Citizens for CO2 submit the following proposed Resolution to Rebrand Texas to the members of the Texas State Legislature for their prayerful consideration.

WHEREAS carbon is an essential element in the composition and sustainability of all living systems; and

WHEREAS carbon fuels are vital to the functioning of our national and world economies; and

WHEREAS the great state of Texas leads all other states and lesser nations in the extraction, refinement and distribution of carbon fuels; and

WHEREAS the great state of Texas ushered in the modern oil and gas industry when a gusher of crude oil money erupted at Spindletop in 1901; and

WHEREAS the great state of Texas continues to pioneer innovations in the extraction of carbon fuels, including excitingly profitable breakthroughs in the hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling of shale oil and gas; and

WHEREAS the great state of Texas is home to many of the nation’s largest carbon industry leaders, including ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Shell, and Valero; and

WHEREAS the state’s carbon industry has a long and deeply-rooted tradition of sharing its expertise and resources generously with federal and state legislators, and with policy-makers in federal and state energy, environmental, budgetary and tax policy agencies, and has been actively engaged, both publicly and privately, in important facets of our political life, including foreign policy; and

WHEREAS the future vibrancy of the Texas economy depends critically on the world’s continued demand for carbon fuels; and

WHEREAS the world’s continuing reliance on carbon fuels is imperiled by alarmist warnings from self-described “climate scientists” and negative-thinking “environmentalists” who imagine that rising carbon dioxide emissions are somehow turning the North Pole into the North Pool, and increasing the likelihood of fictitious weather events such as “Sharknado”; and

WHEREAS  the Texas carbon industry, while rejecting the claims of extreme scientists and granola huggers, acknowledges the theoretical possibility that climate and weather may now be changing as a result of industrial activity, and is prepared to interpret any such changes as beneficial; and

WHEREAS the great state of Texas is called to defend its carbon economy against critics, challenging these ill-informed cassandras through an aggressive counter-campaign that boldly doubles down on the state’s political and  economic commitment to the industry;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the State of Texas will hereinafter be known officially as The Carbon State; and let the state’s license plates, media campaigns, and op-ed pages reflect our pride in the fact that Texas remains at the wheel of the American carbon economy, and carbon is driving America’s future.

This message was approved by Citizens for CO2 in collaboration with Texans for a Gassier Tomorrow, Tex Greenhouse, treasurer
